Sublimation printing flags, 1-sided or two-sided, are very easy to do! Here are the procedures for applying dye sublimation transfers to a 2-sided flag. First, always check the product instructions for your particular flag product and inks, and of course what temperature works best on your heat press.

The transfers are created using a Ricoh GX e3300 printer with Sawgrass SubliJet-R sublimation inks on TexPrint-R Sublimation Paper, with a George Knight K20S heat press.

Sublimation Printing a Flag, 2-sided, Instructions

  1. Preheat your heat to press to 400° F.
  2. Prepress flag blanks.
  3. Create sublimation pocket with each side of the sublimation print sides taped top-to-top with heat safe tape.
  4. Center flag in taped paper pocket with flag pole sleeve off edge of print.
  5. Preheat heat press pad. *This is key to getting the second side to sublimate at the same time.
  6. After preheating heat press pad, lay pocketed flag on top of teflon sheet.
  7. Cover with second teflon sheet.
  8. Press with medium pressure for 2 minutes at 400° F.
  9. Remove from pocket and let cool.

Fixing Sublimation problems

Feel free to follow along with what I did, but I’ve always found that every setup might be slightly different depending on equipment and products. Some presses are hotter or cooler than others.

3 Variables that affect the finished product

When your sublimation comes out faded, blurry, or burned there are 3 things that can be adjusted:

  1. Temperature
  2. Time
  3. Pressure

Increasing or decreasing any of these can correct your sublimation problem. Starting with the products original instructions and adjusting by trial and error for the best results.
